12/3 Brief Update + 2 Podcasts

There are 28 days left in the decade. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for coming along on this crazy journey with me. You are one of the folks who supports me, lifts me up, and gives me energy by viewing, reading and listening to the stuff I put out there. Once in a while someone reaches out to tell me something I said or wrote resonated with them and led to a positive change. It fires me up every time! So let me know what sticks with you.

Here are two podcasts, #10 and #11, with Kasey Taylor, founder of the Scooty Fund, and Dean Hall, extreme distance swimmer, speaker, author, and therapist. Both of these stories are incredible. Yes, I know they are also 2 hours long… it’s not necessary to listen to the full length to be entertained/gain value and I want to stick with the longer format because I prefer not to constrict the creativity, breadth and depth of the conversation for the sake of trying to get more people to listen to it. Likely I will begin producing more shorter and other long form podcasts depending on the situation.

Here is a photo of Kasey and I in my studio

Kasey Taylor is the sister of Scooty, Will Taylor. Will died by suicide March 4th, 2017. The Scooty Fund was established with a mission to promote, support and advance culture surrounding mental health and wellness in ways that enhance the lives and well-being of young people.

11 podcasts out now- but I’m just getting started. I enjoy the process. I get to learn from folks about things they are passionate about. It’s also a good break from the lonely editing hours and an opportunity to improve myself as an interviewer and conversationalist. Don’t tell the guests….

FYI, it’s not that hard to start a podcast. If you have a phone you can do it pretty easily. Just about everyone should have a podcast and I can help you get it set up. Message me.

Dean Hall, Willamette River

_KTH7361

In episode #11, Dean talks about how we hold ourselves back from going after our crazy, wild dreams in the name of reason and responsibility- while in fact the most reasonable and responsible thing we can do is go after those dreams.

There are in-depth descriptions to each of the episodes on SoundCloud, so check those out there.

Here is a shortlist of podcasts I subscribe to:

Book recommendation:

Creative Calling, by Chase Jarvis. We all are creative. We create our lives through the actions we take on a daily basis. Creative Calling is a kick in the ass as well as a tool to begin the journey of pursuing that “creative calling” you have inside, no matter your age, professional background or aspirations. This book is written for those who want to make a career transition, start a business, find a hobby or follow a calling, whatever it might be.

One motto I adopted in 2019: “Create Before You Consume.” In a world with unlimited content it’s easy to become habitual consumers, never taking action to create our life’s masterpiece or to go after our dreams.

Podcast: Anti-Fragility and Cold Water with Jason Stauffer

Episode 9 features Jason Stauffer, President of Morozko Forge. After seven years in the Army, Jason began training anti-fragility through exposure. After reading “What Doesn’t Kill Us” by Scott Karney and attending a Wim Hof cold coaching session, Jason, along with a few like-minded friends began experimenting with cold water tubs in their backyard in Phoenix, AZ. Several ripped-apart refrigerator modules later, Morozko Forge was founded to help people gain access to cold water immersion therapy without going to a high-end wellness center.

The science and research around cold water therapy is young, but promising. Since 1902, the proliferation of climate-controlled rooms has softened our resilience to hot and cold temperatures. As Jason explains, cardiovascular processes are stressed and “exercised” with exposure to hot or cold temperatures. Beyond the benefits of feeling comfortable in cold weather and a strengthened immune system, more evidence is coming out in support of cold water immersion’s health benefits.

This episode is different than the previous 8 because it was done over the phone. Face to face conversations are always best, but nonetheless Jason drops a ton of incredible knowledge and shares a story worth hearing. It will certainly be exciting to watch Morozko grow in 2020.

Podcast: Building a Career in Commercial Real Estate with Sharif Batroukh

Episode 8 features Sharif Batroukh, a commercial real estate broker pursuing his goal of achieving financial freedom and designing his ideal life. Sharif’s thoughtful and well-articulated insights are valuable for anyone launching or accelerating their career. Our conversation spans topics from handling life transitions, staying consistent, relationships, fitness and more.

Podcast: JP Pilapil on his new album, “Eleven”

Episode 7 of the Adventure Creator Podcast features JP Pilapil. JP is a Seattle-based rapper, grad student and future EY accountant. JP shares the story about how he found himself pursuing a career as a rapper, the ups and downs of following your dreams and why he takes his goals so seriously. I came away from our conversation fired up about my own craft and buzzing from the energy JP brought to the room.

I love talking with someone who truly enjoys the process of putting in the time and going through the grind. JP’s work ethic is a big reason why he’s able to live a balanced life and write and produce an entire music album. It’s one thing to talk about going after your goals and it’s another to take the actions necessary to get there.

In every podcast conversation I’ve had (only 7), I can envision the future success and fulfillment of the person sitting across from me. It brings me joy to witness other people starting down a path of pursuing their goals and passions. If I can produce podcasts and films that I’m as proud of as JP if of his music I’ll be on my way to the life I want to live. That being said, it’s really about the journey- so I’ll leave you with this quote: “Remember when you wanted what you currently have?” – via Chase Jarvis

To listen to JP’s new album, ‘Eleven,’ search for Pilapil on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or Soundcloud.

Podcast: Movement in the Modern World – Steve Huber

Episode #6 features my brother, Steve Huber. Apart from being an avid weightlifter and personal trainer, Steve is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate people I know when it comes to health and fitness. Our conversation is based the idea, ‘Movement in the Modern world’; humans have been evolving and adapting to our environments for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years. 10,000 years ago things changed drastically as a result of the agricultural revolution and more recently the age of technology and industrialization has altered human lifestyles.

We talk about Steve’s journey with health, diet and fitness and the primal movement- the idea that living and moving in tune with how we are designed from an evolutionary and biological standpoint may relieve many modern health issues.

This 90+ minute podcast is packed with information and yet still barely touches the surface as far as what is out there to learn and consume. It will be exciting to see Steve follow his passion to explore this space and continue to share his knowledge with others.

Short Film Trailer: 52 Weeks

There are 52 weeks in a year. JP Cooke, Marita Solberg, and their dog Alpental spend all 52 weekends in the mountains. Either skiing or mountain biking, living in a van, the trio faces the challenges accompanying a lifestyle which revolves around the outdoors.

Last January Marita faced a near-death experience, tomahawking more than 1,000 vertical feet in the South back-country of Crystal Mountain. Witnessing Marita’s recovery and comeback first-hand showed me one thing: nobody loves the mountains more than these three.

Follow the trio on Instagram: @mountainman.nw – @mountaingirl.nw – mountaindog.nw to get behind the scenes this Winter.

Our short film project has been a year in the making and will be completed this Spring. I am honored to tell this story and continue to understand why they do what they do.

A lifestyle revolving around the outdoors does not come without challenge. But when pursuing their passions and chasing their dreams, the challenges can be surmounted.

ACP #5 – Honing a Craft – Lewis Radow

We are all on our own path, and we all have a story to tell. What unites us is our need for creativity and adventure.

Episode 5 features glass artist Lewis Radow. Lewis is a long-time friend and someone I’ve looked up to and been inspired by. I’m intrigued by Lewis’ consistency and commitment. Seeing Lew carve his own path as an artist has certainly allowed me to take the steps necessary to find a direction for my life.

Our conversation spans a number of topics from getting started as an artist, balancing work with craft, the positive aspects of social media, and how health is a pillar of any successful endeavor.

Nepal Vlog: Slowing Down Time

September 2019, trekking the Annapurna Circuit. I had no intention to make this video or create anything on this adventure. My only goal was to be present.

But as I walked through the mountains I gathered inspiration. My creative energy was awakened. I was provoked to think about how I will spend my days. So I decided to make this video and to write an article about my trip (coming in November)

Life is short. Take time to slow down once and while, and maybe it’ll last a bit longer 🙂

This video is made in a vertical format for IGTV- something I’ve never done before, and posed the challenge of trying to capture the essence of such a grand place without a wide screen… All shot on my phone, with a bit of voice over to bring the story together. Hope you enjoy!

The contact information for my guide company: Travel with Ngawang

Huge thanks to Ngawang + Sonam, Tony Foster, Derek Newhof and everyone else who has been a part of my path as a creator and human being. We are all in this together. The more we rely on each other and depend on one another, the better off we will all be.

Podcast: Finding Your Voice, Madi Owen

Episode #4 features fine artist and painter, Madi Owen. I visit Madi in her studio in Seattle to talk about finding your voice as an artist, setting your personal life in order, balancing business and creativity, and a lot more.

Madi is not only an incredibly talented artist and successful business owner, but as I found out during our conversation, she is also an engaging storyteller. We talk about how she became an artist, lessons learned along the way, and her vision for the future. If I was a gambling man, I’d put my chips on Madi becoming a much more widely known artist in the very near future.

This episode is a bit different for a few reasons. First, we deal with a bit of background noise and some technical difficulties (as my microphone fell off the table once or twice) but also because I recorded the intro and published this podcast from Nepal. I return to Seattle October 15th and will hit the ground running with a wide variety of new guests and new perspectives. Comments, questions, and suggested guests are welcome.
